Introduction

Established in 1997, the purpose of TTRC was to establish an organization at a local level involving youths, who have a better understanding of their area; to engage them in the development process and extend the housing program initiated in Orangi by OPP-RTI (supported in establishing TTRC). It is a non-profit, non- sectarian civil society organization, registered under the Society Act 1860. The core team initiated training and later on, trained youths (male and female) to become part of the team. TTRC works on request basis and has been providing technical support to different CSOs, CBOs, NGOs at village, goth and town level.

TTRC is a link between professionals and low-income groups. The team acquires training on a regular basis from professionals and training organizations and supports the community through technical guidance at low cost. TTRC has provided technical support to OPP-RTI, URC, Shelter Project, Faran Educational Society, Indus Resource Centre, MALC, KUL, NED University, SSUET, KARITAS and CBO’s. TTRC has strengthened its contact with local government bodies, providing support to TTRC’s program and activities.

A housing survey conducted by TTRC with the support of OPP-RTI in 1997 concluded poor planning and technical issues in houses due to lack of understanding of the house owners and masons. Due to financial constraints the residents of low-income settlements are not able to hire professionals for guidance on planning and construction. TTRC initiated mobilization on the significance of constructing a properly planned and technically sound house.

It initiated the Low Cost Housing Program but with time extended and evolved new programs. Programs undertaken by TTRC; Low Cost Housing, Community Youth Training, Education (strengthening School Saving Groups), Women Saving and Area Mapping programs. TTRC maps and documents communities, learning from the people’s initiatives and through its technical expertise; this learning later evolves into programs. TTRC has been involved in research and rehabilitation related to natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, pandemic) since 2005.

TTRC has been working independently since 2016 as was its founder, late Ma’am Perween Rahman and Dr. Hameed khan’s dream. TTRC is a strengthened organization on four aspects: social /technical skills, organizational setup, managerial and financial system. TTRC has established contacts with CBOs in low-income settlements of Karachi for the extension of these programs, efforts are on-going.
